This contest was HOT!! and not just the weather! I was of the chosen few asked to judge this event along with (NEW World Height Record holder - '59 ft.) Ronnie Renner, Jimmy "Big Mac" McGuire, Graham "Bustin" Gustin and Don Szabo, with the honorable Regis Harrington III presiding as head judge. The (past) "Voice of Freestyle" Cameron Steele was doing the live MC work.
Riders / Tricks to note:
Cameron Sinclair's (Australia) "Full Tilt" Flips (suicide-back-flips)
Robbie Maddison's "Super Flips" (superman-flips)
Beau Bamburg's Huge "KOD Flips"
Jeremy Lusk's "Back Flip-KOD-Helicopters)
Jeremy "Twitch" Stenberg flip tricking the entire mid section (6 pack) of the course.
Todd Potter's mega-turn downs
Adam Jones' "Star Fish Flips"
Just like X-Games the LG FMX World Championships are run as a head-to-head format. This makes it a bit easier to judge but usually a hand full of riders get the much shorter end of the stick even though they may have only lost by a fraction of a point to their opponent (ex: Lusk vs. Bamburg & Maddison vs. Stenberg). As a result they finished up to 4-5 spots behind that same person (and $5k less) as the consequence.
Twitch came out as the defending champion and truly deserved. He had minimal-to-no dead sailors in his runs and packed his air time with a multitude of flip tricks and hard fillers. I do wish that "the Destroyer" Nate Adams and "Bilko" Blake Williams would have been healthy (both riders injured days before) enough to challenge last years king. Until next year.
